THE GREAT 8 is a piece to be performed by up to 8 percussionists The piece roughly follows the format of a fugue with the motive performed by players 1-3 in the opening 4 measures serving as the fugue’s subject.  The work brings to the forefront the importance of musical line, and great care should be taken to identify, clarify, and point out the importance of the prime line of the piece.  A perk of the design of this work is that it may be performed in several different formats.  Knowing the difficulty of having an inconsistent number of percussionists available for chamber ensemble performance from year to year, the piece is designed to work as a duet, trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, septet or octet!  This piece has it all!  It has flexibility, great musical line, and challenging chamber concepts, and above all, it is guaranteed to be fun for your students!  Please enjoy performing THE GREAT 8 with your students, and thank you in advance for your enthusiastic performance!
